Guatemala seeks to export more to Asia, for which the businessmen will create a specific working table to enhance trade opportunities with that continent.

The Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport) stated that the Asia Table will be created to promote sales of national products, a joint effort with national companies, with the intention of determining the trends of demanded products, having company profiles and opening gap for national companies.

Paola Álvarez, Agexport Promotion and Market Development Manager said that part of that work has been to work together with different organizations, including the Taiwanese embassy, ​​to send representatives of various companies to fairs in the food and various products sectors in seeks to achieve more business and increase exports.

There are products with high potential and Taiwan is the door for entrepreneurs to enter the Asian market, to that region not only expect to enter through Japan or China Popular added Álvarez.

The executive believes that companies have opportunities to compete in the Asian market but they must prepare. Eugenia Yang, economic advisor of the Taiwanese embassy in Guatemala, added that the trends in demand for products in her country behave according to world trends.

At present, healthy products such as food, convenience products and also beauty and health products based on more natural products are in demand, in which the country has an opportunity.

Need to diversify more

The representative said that she sees a need for Guatemala to further diversify its export offer.

“There are many opportunities in Taiwan. Taiwan is a platform where the entrepreneur can take advantage of this fair at an international level, and there one looks for opportunities and not only does business with the Taiwanese, but with other countries such as companies in China, other Asians, and others like the United States and Europe ” Yang added, but recommends that you have to be aggressive and be prepared to explore the markets. Gabriel Biguria, manager of Acuamaya, said that Asia has 4.4 billion people and a high purchasing power where you have the opportunity to position Guatemalan products and understand the importance of participating in that market. “What else are we going to expect as a country to bet on the Asian market?” Biguria expressed.

The embassy of Taiwan and Agexport support a delegation of five companies to participate in the Food Taipei Fair next week, apart from Acuamaya (shrimp producer), Alimentos Selectos, SA (macadamia, honey, coffee), Apsa Export will attend (chía), Yehudá Corporation (amaranth, cocoa, honey and coffee), the San Pedro Necta Farmers Association (coffee).

This is the 28th edition of the Taipei International Food Show, recognized as “Food Taipei”, one of the largest food industry fairs in Asia, which will take place from June 27 to 30.

This is carried out simultaneously with Foodtech & Pharmatech Taipei, Taipei Pack, Taiwan Horeca and Halal Taiwan.

Altogether, in 2017 it had a record of 1,717 exhibitors, 4,011 stands and 61,803 visitors. Guatemala’s exports to Taiwan have increased fivefold in the 11 years of the Free Trade Agreement, and reached US $ 76.5 million in 2017.

Businessmen in Guatemala have detected at least four types of products that can be exported to Taiwan due to the demand they have.
